Let’s Chat With A Chiropractor

bonesOnce you get going on a healthy path for the mind, body and soul you’ll find there are many options to keep you well. I always like to try out everything to see if it’s a good fit for my personal path, and something that’s shown up lately is chiropractic.

Robyn Crouch, a practicing chiropractor in Long Island, so kindly responded to my questions about her work, and what chiropractic is all about.

Can you please explain what you do as a chiropractor?

To help people understand what I do as a chiropractor a basic understanding of the chiropractic premise is necessary. Your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord and nerves, controls and coordinates every single function in your body and brain. In fact, there are over 200,000 nerve impulses per second that travel from your brain, down your spinal cord, through the nerves, to and from every cell of your body. Without your thinking about it at all, your hair grows, your heart beats, you digest your food, you breathe through your lungs, you experience all your emotions, and even think your thoughts, while your central nervous system controls and coordinates all these functions. You literally live your life through your nervous system. Every function in your body and all of your senses are completely dependent on your nervous system. When your nerve energy flows abundantly, without obstruction, your body and brain are 100% self-communicating, self-healing and self-regulating. When your body experiences any type of nerve interference or damage (subluxation), this interrupts normal nerve flow, similar to static on your cell phone, and you are no longer functioning at 100%. As a result, your health and vitality are compromised and your body is no longer 100% self-healing and self-regulating. Subluxations are caused by your body’s inability to handle three major types of stress – physical, mental-emotional and chemical. What I do as a chiropractor is detect and correct any nerve interference in the body

    What is an adjustment?

A Chiropractic adjustment is the use of a specific force or non force in a precise direction that helps normalize nervous system function. Most practice members report a sense of well-being or a feeling of calmness. Chiropractors are experts at making adjustments feel good.

    Who are your patients?

We see people of all ages in our office. I am certified by the American Academy of Chiropractic Pediatrics. We see babies and children for wellness just to make sure everything is working right. Chiropractic has been known to help with ear infections, Colic, allergies, asthma and overall improvement of the immune system. We see many adults for back pain, neck pain headaches, digestive issues and other health issues. We also see many people for peak performance and wellness care. Many patients come during pregnancy to help keep their spine and nervous system healthy to insure a better delivery.

When do the effects of your treatment begin to take effect?

Every person is different so it’s hard to say. Most people start to see improvement within 6-12 visits. Many people once they understand how chiropractic keeps them healthy continue on to receive regular care throughout their lives.

Are there any types of complementary practices/ modalities  you encourage to aid in the healing process of your work?

I recommend exercise particularly yoga and a healthy diet to aid in the healing process.

What’s been your personal experience as a patient of chiropractic work?

Chiropractic keeps me healthy and feeling great.

Please tell me about your center, and what you hope to accomplish with your work there.

My office is located inside a yoga studio. There are several other holistic practioners that practice inside the studio. A holistic podiatrist and two massage therapists and an esthetician. This environment is full of many people looking to use natural alternatives for health. We also offer something called Braincore Neurofeedback. It is a training procedure designed to help many neurological and emotional issues such as ADHD, Anxiety, Migraines and many others. Our goal is to help as many families and individuals get healthy and stay healthy for a lifetime.

    1. Very creative and informative post, Elysha. I used to think chiropractic works on our bones (shows you how much I know). I thought about “Qi” from the Chinese acupuncture while reading Robyn’s answer about chiropractic adjustment. Do you think the two are related?

    2. Terry, that’s a really good question! I don’t know if there’s a relationship between Eastern practices and chiropractic. From what Robyn said – her work is about restoring efficiency within the nervous system…I like to think that our energy flow is in direct connection to that. I’ll see if Robyn is around to chime in on that. Thank You!

    3. That is a great question. Qi is all about balance. Chiropractic is about bringing balance to the nervous system. The two are very related. Yin is rest and yang is action. The central nervous system has a parasympathetic system which relaxes while the sympathetic nervous system revs things up.

    4. Thanks Elysha and Robyn. Like I said very informative. I am also envious of the practices inside of the yoga studio. Seems to be such a natural fit.

    5. As usual, I replied to this the other day and friggin phone, right?

I began seeing a chiropractor a few years back and eventually he recommended massage therapy. I see him every now and then to align my hips. Just like iPhones- friggin hips! Lol

Wellness therapies, whether chiropractors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, etc are true to their description: wellness. Caring for ourselves, our body… we need to compliment this wellness in our lives – find balance and feel restored. We only have one body… why not focus on wellness instead of luxurious material stuff. In the end, such material stuff can only do so much. But our bodies when cared for has brighter potential.

      Lovely piece, Elysha! xoxo

    6. Right on, Maia! I totally agree, and I’ll usually (though not always) purchase the wellness experience over the material splurge…. speaking of which…I could really use a massage now!! ???? Thanks so much for coming back to re-do your comment. I can’t ever comment from my phone which is a bummer because when the inspiration strikes to comment, I want to do it immediately– before I forget. So I really appreciate you coming back, my yogi friend. x x

    7. Wow, i never thought that chiropractic is way more complicated than treating back pains. I am enlightened on how important nervous system is to our body. All those years i thought that chiropractic is just like an old type of massage technique for neck and back pains. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge, i learned a lot.
