What Colors Look Good On Me

If you're wondering what colors look good on me then there are a few ways to figure this out. By being more intentional with your color choices, you'll show up looking and feeling better in your clothes.

Back in the 80s I set out to answer the question what colors look good on me. I had discovered the Color Me Beautiful system which categorized people based on the seasons – winter, spring, summer and fall.

For me, it was quite simple. I easily checked off the boxes for hair, skin and eyes which put me in the autumn category. I went through this system with my mother who had dark eyes and olive skin so was easily seen as a winter. Her friend – who also did it with us- had light eyes and light brown hair. She neatly fell into spring.

My experience with Color Me Beautiful was pretty straight forward. Based on my tonality, I was given guidance on which palettes would flatter me best. Shopping was simplified as I knew to reach for the warm, muted colors of autumn.

    The Subdivision Of Seasons

Years later, the system had come under scrutiny because it didn’t talk to the myriad variations in coloring that people come in. Updates were later created which incorporate 12 seasons, and bring in elements like chroma which is your skin’s level of saturation.

Your color analysis can get a bit more complicated when dividing it into these micro-elements. So if you’re looking for a simple way to answer the question, what colors look good on me, read on!

    The Warm Cool Factor

First off, it’s helpful if you know whether you’re warm or cool toned as this serves as a foundation for what you’ll wear. An easy way to determine this is with the jewelry test. Hold up a piece of gold jewelry next to your face and compare it to a piece of silver jewelry next to your face. Which one looks better? If you prefer gold, then you’re warm toned. If it’s silver, you’re cool. Another way to determine if you’re warm or cool is to look at your veins in your wrist. Blue veins are cool. Green veins are warm.

Sometimes our coloring changes as we age. If you have always been warm toned, you may discover that as your hair grays you may become more cool toned.

    Hue Experimentation

The next thing I encourage you to do is try things on. Get into your closet, pick out a few items, and put them on. Then go look at yourself in the mirror. When you’re wearing the right colors, you’ll look vibrant and healthy. When you’re in unflattering colors, you’ll look tired. Or even sick. Another thing to pay attention to is when you get compliments from other people. Note what you’re wearing as this is usually a good indication that it’s the right color for you.

What Colors Looks Good On Me

When we are intentional with our color choices it impacts how we show up in our lives. So when you’re getting dressed each day, and deciding what to wear, it’s important to consider who you need to be on that particular day. Do you have a meeting where you need to come across as strong? Then red would be a good color to wear. Or if you want to be seen as approachable, try blue. Most colors fall on both the warm and cool spectrum so be sure to choose one that aligns with your skin tone.

In the video above, from my facebook live, I go through a bunch of pieces to demonstrate what colors look good on me. You’ll clearly see which tones flatter and which do not. I also share a styling trick on how to wear a color that may not be the best for your skin, but you love wearing it anyway.

I have dark auburn hair and a ruddy complexion. Someone once said to me not to wear black. I love black. Could you help me out here?

    2. Hi Pamela, A lot of people love wearing black! When you look at yourself wearing a black top, how do you think you look? Does it make you look vibrant? Or sick? This is one way to determine if a color looks good on you.

Hi Elysha, I think I’m meant to be warm toned but I don’t like any of the colours I should and always seem to go towards cool colours . I love white, baby pink and blue, silvers, light greys and colours like that and I do think they look okay in me whereas any greens browns etc are awful. Do you have any idea why this is please

    4. Hi Theresa, What makes you think you are meant for warm colors? You could always hold up a bunch of different colors next to your face to compare and see which ones you like best.

    5. Blue, blue, blue! Brings out my eyes and flatters my skin tone:). Thanks for the reminders on colors . . .

I don’t know if I’m cool or warm. I wear both silver and gold things, and my wrists have blue and green vains in them.
