If you want to use your clothing to look longer and leaner, these fashion tips will help. I’m going to show the different ways to use the figure flattering details in your outfit to impact the illusion of what you’re wearing. Basically, once you apply these style tips, you’ll look taller and slimmer!
Lines In Your Clothes
Within most items of clothing there are different lines. Some are horizontal and some are vertical. While they could be an actual stripe or style detail, you’ll also find lines in your clothing in:
- Hems
- Cuffs
- Button Downs
- Seams
- Open Jackets + Cardigans
- Ties and Tassels
Horizontal Lines
Because our eyes naturally seek the grounding element of the horizon, we notice horizontal lines first. So if you look at a garment with both horizontal and vertical lines, the horizontal lines will stand out more. If you want to draw attention towards an area of your body, then place horizontal lines there. If you want to draw attention away from an area, put the horizontal lines somewhere else and draw the eye there.
Vertical Lines
To elongate a look, you’ll want to wear an outfit that is vertical line dominate. But remember, this doesn’t mean you have to wear stripes. There are plenty of options for integrating vertical lines into your look. Try pleats, plackets, button downs and ribbed items. You can even take your blouses to the tailor and have them insert darts for more vertical lines.
So to elongate your look, create as many vertical lines as possible in your clothing.
