Last years polar vortex was intense.
After wearing my winter jacket into a flurry of shedding feathers, I promised myself an upgrade of something new.
My mission to find my next coat brought me into several stores searching for the perfect down puffer, the gold standard in winter’s worst elements. Though there were many styles to choose from, finding one in original taste proved challenging. There’s a fine line between warming up well, and bundling up like a marshmallow.
The truth is, in the dead of winter — when the ice-chilling freeze shoots straight to the bone– fashion isn’t the main priority; it’s about staying warm. But by the end of last season, I was so sick of slipping on my long, black coat that I’m determined to find something that can keep me looking cute as well as handle the bitter temps.
Here are 5 winter coats that standout from the crowd, and can stand on their own in the polar vortex.
There are so many rights about this jacket from the faux fur trim which adds a bohemian touch to the neutral color that’s flattering for most. The icing on the cake, this one is on sale! The bummer, it’s only availabe in a couple sizes.
You can’t go wrong with a Moncler winter coat though expect to shell out over a grand to get it.
This coat is de rigueur for winter’s serious chill, placing it into regular rotation for most NYers.
I love the idea of this — the shawl collar, the mid-length and the warm tone. But it’s potential to bake you into a marshmallow is oozing from the seams. It needs a proper try-on to warrant its wearability.
This number challenges every notion that a down coat can’t be chic. I only wish it came in another color besides black.
What will you be wearing this winter?

Thanks for the inspiration, Elysha. I had been wearing a completely de-puffed puffer for the past few years and was determined to get something warmer AND bright. My new jacket is much lower brow than your choices, but I purchased a bright orange number from Athleta at a recent promotion of theirs. I love how lightweight and colorful it is, but am a little concerned that it will not be warm enough–even though the catalogue states that it is super warm. Fingers crossed. Hope you find your cozy and stylish dream, my friend. xoxo
ST, Until I find my next coat I’m going to keep wearing my parka. It won’t be warm enough for the freezing cold so I’ll layer it — with thinner (but warm) jackets underneath. Perhaps this could be a good solution for your new coat if its not doing the job on it’s own? Regardless, I love the sound of your bright, orange number! X x O o
Oh, right! Why do I never think of layering jackets? Thanks so much–a terrific solution, my friend. This is why you are in the driver’s seat on styling…inside and out. xoxo
Checkout Uniqlo–they have a great selection of layering jackets. Xoxo
Excellent–thank you again. Muah!
