First off, if you want to make your party outfit pop, I always advise to avoid black because that’s what everyone else is wearing. If you want to stand out, show up in color!
I learned this hard way.
Several years ago, DH invited me to attend the Grammy’s with him when they were in NYC. I was so excited and immediately went out to shop a new look. I ended up buying a black tuxedo suit because it made me feel amazing. When I arrived at the event I knew right away that I had made a bad decision. Granted, I was in the company of musicians and artists so of course they were all dressed up in a bold way…think – peacock feather dresses and superhero action suits. But my black tuxedo pants suit blended in with the production crew setting up the event. At the after party, I swore I’d never wear black to a big event again.
Next, I suggest adding in something unexpected. Back to my tuxedo suit, I didn’t think out of the box at all. I went with total comfort which I advise, but if you really want to pop, you need to step out of your comfort zone a bit. If I could do it again, I’d add in a cool hair piece to make a statement. Or maybe a pair of killer shoes to take the outfit over the top. You can always look out for inspiration, but make sure to take the ideas and make them your own.
Lastly, it’s all about your attitude. In order to stand out, you need to make yourself seen and this requires a friendly and outgoing demeanor. Make sure to chat with strangers, but keep it genuine and try to always find common interests.
Whenever I’m in a party place, I love engaging others in conversation to learn everything I can about who they are and what they do. Sometimes, I do this too a fault, and it keeps me from sharing anything about myself. Because the truth is, most people love to talk about themselves, and could go on for hours if you let them. This is great for shy or introverted people to engage others with curiosity. Just make sure to let your guard down and share something about yourself to keep it a conversation and not a monologue.
