Styling From The Inside: Secrets From The Colour Coach

balloons

When working on photo shoots, and with private clients, I rarely recommend black.
I go for brights, prints, or other vibrant combinations to illuminate a picture, or my clients wardrobe.

I never knew there was a deeper meaning behind these color choices. I just liked how bolder colors made more of a statement.
Turns out, the colors we wear (and eat and surround ourselves in) do make a difference in how we feel.
And paying attention to these choices is key to styling from the inside out.Read More »Styling From The Inside: Secrets From The Colour Coach

Here’s How To Win The Race (Or At Least Finish)

photo
So I did my first triathalon last week.

Ok. Let me re-phrase…
I was one third of my triathalon team. I rode the bike.

I’ve never raced before. In fact, I’m not into competitive sports at all. (I’m more of an Om Shanti kind of girl.)
But I do love bike riding so I figured, why not? I’ll try something new.

And you know what…it was awesome!

Here’s why this race was such a success (even though we didn’t win).Read More »Here’s How To Win The Race (Or At Least Finish)

Real Style Tip For Today

Get a massage!

Massage-Therapy-Massage

Though not a form of meditation, the healing art of bodywork is definitely an opportunity to practice mindfulness…perhaps in the most relaxing fashion! And similar to yoga– massage has the built-in benefit of getting into your body, so you can get out of your head.

The Inside Out Of Finding The Beat

Have you ever been to SoulCycle? If yes, then you know how important it is to find the beat of your ride.
If no, you can read about my experience in the indoor cycling sensation here.

Basically, the beat to SoulCycle is like the heart of the class. It’s what keeps everyone pumped up through their spin while maintaining the foundation for the collective energy in the room.

    I’m not a regular.
    Or even close.

I’ve been about a dozen times. And in the bulk of those classes, I was consumed with trying to find the beat.

My eyes would scope around the room looking for the pros, those who were in sync and in the groove.
Of course, the lead bounce of the instructor was the first place that caught my attention. Then I’d check out the front row with their tattoos and tattered tees who were also always pulsing on the beat.

I’d try to match their moves in hopes of simulating their steps.
But it never happened. And I’d pedal along on my own…slightly off from the rest of the group.

    Seeing The Purpose (Again)

      see-the-purpose

After watching Mr. Holland’s Opus last night I felt it was appropriate to re-post this piece from last summer.

I think many of us struggle with trying to create our grand symphony in life– whether we can’t find the time, or don’t know exactly how it looks or sounds.
Mr. Holland came to realize that his opus was his students. All those years teaching — that was his symphony — not his after-hours passion of creation.
His purpose was embedded in the day to day.

What would it feel like to know this while you’re in it…to know that what you’re doing every day has meaning for yourself and others? We tend to look beyond for the great purpose which could potentially push it off it into an elusive place.

Here’s what I had to say about this last July.

      Practice To Be Better

People that are really into yoga call it their practice.
They’d say something like I am so glad I woke up early to practice this morning.
Or they’d ask a friend did you practice yet today?

Meditation is pretty much the same…it’s considered a practice.
Unlike performers whose rehearsal culminates in a performance, practice is ongoing with the intention of learning, or instilling patterns of behavior or movement.Read More »Practice To Be Better

Lessons On Listening From My Kindergartner

      whole-body
Earlier in the school year, G came home talking about whole body listening.
      It’s this (explained by G):

Whole Body listening is when you sit down, and keep your hands in your lap.
You watch Debbie (the teacher) and pay attention.
You don’t talk and you don’t move.
You think about what she is saying.

      Awesome.
It’s like whole living and mindfulness wrapped up in one!

And how great is it that kids are learning this so young?
But wait–are adults actually doing it?Read More »Lessons On Listening From My Kindergartner

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

      reader
It’s a good thing I wasn’t put off by the title of Anna Deavere Smith’s book Letters To A Young Artist.

      First off, I’m not young.
Second, how do I know if I’m artist? I don’t paint. I’m terrible at drawing. Does web writing count?

It was the name of the first chapter, Presence, that drew me into the book. I thought, awesome – the book begins with a word on mindfulness…how cool is that– this actress (who I LOVE from Nurse Jackie) is touching on one of my favorite topics.Read More »Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover
